I Like Thursdays 2018, Week #8

A day late and a dollar short, I am. Linking up to Not Afraid of Color.

I like buzzards.
I've always like them- spectacularly ugly, so much so that they're beautiful, and so necessary for the ecosystem.

These two were scared off by the flash, but not bothered at first when I opened my kitchen door to take their portrait.
We sometimes have a dozen or so hanging out in a tree across the street.

I like a clean machine (I'm in love with my Featherweight, sung to this tune:

I like having a spouse that can kludge together solutions - I asked for a spindle adapter for my bobbin winder, and he had a pen part that he wasn't in love with that works perfectly!

I like how this guy has LASER focus on the people food.

I still like beer. Last Friday we were at the FeBrewary Maryland Craft Beer festival.

I like making clothes. I don't do it a lot- but the youngest wanted a robe for his birthday.

NEW THIS WEEK!! One of my goals for this year was to sew every day (and I've rocked it) with a stretch goal of a block a day. Reporting in is a great accountability tool.

Days with stitching this week:  7 out of 7 days
Days with stitching this month:  17 out of 17 days

Days with stitching this year:  48 out of 48 days

Blocks this week:  3
Blocks this month:  25

Blocks this year:  152

Made this week:
The birthday robe for my Small Man (not so small any more- he's almost as tall as me and will very soon be taller).

I used a circa 1975 robe pattern inherited from my mother-in-law.

There are contrasting patch pockets.

Belt loops, even.

He seems happy with it.

Front and back fabrics are different - JoAnn's didn't have enough of the marbled blue fleece for the whole thing.

The sole purchase this week was another bead organizer.

I like Thursdays 2018, Week #7

Linking up to Not Afraid of Color. Hop over there for more Thursday likes.

I like having somebody else make me breakfast. The youngest decided to cook for us Sunday morning. Afterwards, he confided that he wouldn't be doing it again soon!

He made BIG pancakes.

This is what we were presented with 😀 - pancake, scrambled eggs, and bacon.

I like Valentine's Day. I'm making these little hearts; eventually I'll hang them in my office and hope the homophobic coworker comments on them.

I like raspberries. I've been having this for dessert the past few days- graham crackers with marshmallow fluff, a few chocolate chips, and raspberries.

Sunday Stash Report - February 11 (only one day late this week!)

Linking up  to quiltpaintcreate for the Sunday stash report., a day late

Used this week:           1.25 yards
Used year to date:     10.35 yards
Added this week:        19.20 yards
Added year to date:    32.20 yards

Balance:                     21.85 yards ADDED

Spent this week:       $   15.00
Spent this year:        $ 166.22

Made this week:
Some pink pajama shorts, ~1 yard

A beaded heart in the colors of the bisexual pride flag, ~0.25 yards:

I have a few more in the works- the trans pride heart is sewn and stuffed but not beaded; the rainbow heart is quilted and cut out but that's all; the traditional red-and-white is pieced but that's all, and pinks are on the cutting table. I also plan a human rights flag-themed heart as well.

Added this week:

There was free fabric at the guild meeting on Monday. I came home with ~6.4 pounds of fabric. There doesn't seem to be an easy conversion, but the most common number I saw was 3 yards per pound - which would mean 19.2 yards of fabric. EEK.

Lots of FQ; the biggest piece is the red floral at ~3 yards.

Also some embroidery hoops, a skein of yarn, some thread, and some chalk that I need a holder for. There was a vintage pattern and nearly-completed apron.

The $$ was for a new cutting mat and a pencil box.

Project Quilting Challenge #3- Bold and Brave

Linking up to the Project Quilting challenge post at Kim Lapacek's Persimon Dreams.

The theme for this week's challenge is "Bold and Brave."

This little heart (it's about 5 x 5) is the first of a few I want to make.

The colors are those of the bisexual pride flag. Me? I'm cis straight, but not all of my friends and family are. And just BEING THEMSELVES and finding love with whoever their biology drives them towards is a daily act of being bold and brave.

Even those who aren't "out and proud" I think are bold and brave, by accepting themselves when society still for the most part tells them that they've doing things wrong.

Love always wins.

Progress photos below, starting with fabric choices. The flag colors are fairly deep, so I used a pink verging on magenta, purple, and a blue edging close to navy.

A couple of strip sets sewn together and quilted.

Since the back wasn't going to show, I used some vintage parts of a partially-constructed blouse inherited from my mother-in-law.

A paper template to cut out the hearts.

Two little quilted hearts.

At first, I tried sewing them together WITH beads, but I didn't like how that was turning out at all. So, sewed  together with a whip-stitch, leaving raw edges, lightly stuffing, and then beading along the edges.

I have stripsets ready to make a trans pride heart, a rainbow heart- and I'll probably make one in "normal" (sarcasm intended) red and white colors.

I like Thursdays 2018, Week #6

Linking up to Not Afraid of Color.

I still like sparring :)

Our first AAU qualifying tournament was this past weekend. I competed in sparring for the first time in a few years and I WON: 20 - 21.  I got bumped into the black belt division, so longer rounds (but less likelihood of injury).

Not me, but my youngest kid (on the right) and another Strive kid waiting to spar, my middle kid (behind them) coaching.

I like free fabric. There was a HUGE fabric giveaway at our guild meeting on Monday, and I came home with a LOT of fabric, including this mostly finished vintage gingham apron.

Not just fabric, either- embroidery hoops, thread, a skein of yarn.

I
I like Studio Ghibli films. And My Neighbor Totoro is one of my favorites. This little Totoro is for my daughter.

Totoro. Let's call it a quarter-yard.

Added this week:

A big bunch of fleece to make a robe for my youngest- he wanted one for his birthday, so after crepes for dinner we stopped by JoAnn's so that he could pick it out. There wasn't enough of the one he really liked, so he picked two different ones that will go together.

Also a couple of circular knitting needles :)
